The first two episodes of Game of Thrones season 8 haven’t seen much action. There’s been quite a bit of set-up, positioning the chess pieces for an epic battle that comes with much fanfare and excitement. One thing that viewers were treated to in an otherwise slow-paced second week of Thrones was the very first intimate encounter for young Arya Stark, whom they’ve watched grow from a child to an adult over the course of the show.
Arya got down and dirty with Gendry, blacksmith and bastard son of King Robert Baratheon, whom she met way back in the show’s first season. And as one could probably predict…fans had some fun with their reactions.
Considering the fact that Maisie Williams was a literal child when Thrones first began airing, it’s not a shock that a number of viewers questioned what they were seeing. (For what it’s worth, Williams is 22, and HBO conveniently reminded fans that Arya is 18 years old in season 8.)
Others ran with that thought, getting pretty vulgar and crossing references over in the meantime.
Considering the methodical tendencies that have begun more and more to define Arya as a character over the season — her training to become an assassin, and mastering, even embracing, that training — some wondered how those values would translate to a girl’s newfound love life.
Others, however, saw Arya as not being quite fulfilled. Alas, there might only be one thing that makes our young heroine complete these days.
The show’s own Nathalie Emmanuel, aka Missandei, sounded off this morning:
Maisie Williams and Joe Dempsie themselves both felt a little odd about the scene too, sharing their reactions in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
